If you think you're at the top... you aren't

Many people have asked us if there have been times when we ask ourselves why we're doing this. Truthfully, I've answered no. Sure, it's been rough at times, but I've enjoyed it. That is, until the past two days. It's been really hard.  Miles and miles of uphills. I'm realizing just how hard it is to bike uphill with loaded panniers and after days of already biking up mountains. There have been several times when morale has been low and the hills have seemed too steep; when our sunburns hurt and there always seems to be a headwind; when you think you're almost at the top, but it turns out you're only halfway. And these are the moments when I begin to question, when I  begin to doubt. But somehow, God always pulls through. Even though there is an uphill, the views are incredible from 3,800 feet (and the 8 mile downhills). Even when it seems like the landscape is empty, we'll find a nice house to give us water or a ghost town that has a few inhabitants or an old fashioned candy store for nutrients. God has been good, amidst the challenges. Our morning prayers have helped (we are also reading through Psalms and Exodus) guide us. And I've found myself singing Taize songs in my head as I pedal:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
His mercies never come to an end,
They are new every morning,
New every morning,
Great is your faithfulness O God,
Great is your faithfulness.

Lastly, we are currently in the small town of Fossil, Oregon. There is a huge biker rally this weekend, and out of the hundreds, we happened to run into the Christian Motorcycle Association last night at dinner. We ended up camping nearby and they stopped by in the morning to pray for us and bless our bikes. And, the best news yet: IT'S JOANNA'S 22ND BIRTHDAY!!!
