Leaving Oregon

If you've ever been outside of the coast or Portland, at least where we went, you'd know there are a lot of long ups and downs. I said when I get back, I'm going to write a book called "The Road to Tygh Valley" and talk about how treacherous the heat, wind, and climbing was. As bad as our first week went, having almost 10 flats between the four of us, two accidents (no road rash), and a lot of sunburn, leaving Oregon has been bitter sweet in itself. We've experienced long and tiresome days, ending with some of the best hospitality one could find.

After a long day looking for the town of John Day, we stumbled upon Dayville, where we found a church, acting as a bike hostel where we experienced warm showers and a lot off really good food from the potluck that happened to be going on after Sunday's church service. Leaving Dayville, we made our way through John Day and a few days later, eventually came to a town called Brogan where we stumbled upon a peculiar organic farmhouse where we were offered to shower and sleep in cots (which beats sleeping on the ground by far). We ate our leftover spaghetti and some frozen breakfast burritos that our host, Shannon, offered us. I'd say it all tasted pretty good after a long 61 mile day in the wind.

Leaving Shannon's home was something we all knew we'd regret because of her generous hospitality and her kind-hearted offer for us to stay for the night. In the coming days, we've been told and expect to see flat roads and cool tail-winds, making it ideal to make up some of the lost mileage in the past days due to steep hills and windy conditions of what they call the Beaver State.

All of this had only began to prepare us for the 84 mile trek across the western Idaho border into a bustling, yet peaceful city of Eagle, where we were greeted with another warm and delicious meal, and a soft bed to stay the night.
