The Open Road

Well, here we are, 3 bike rides into our journey. We are in Hood River, Oregon, having spent the night with Pastor Steve and Holly. Steve helped us set the map route for today, and both of them showed us incredible hospitality. It has been a moving experience to be welcomed into the homes of strangers. We're a good 170 miles from the coast in the Columbia River Gorge. Yesterday we rode the historic Columbia highway and we were treated to breathtaking views almost constantly. Multnomah Falls, Vista House, Mt. Hood, Mt, Adams. The weather has been clear, windy, and hot. We are all getting pretty tan. We had the opportunity to worship with Theophilous Church in Portland as we stayed with the Swoboda's. Some aspects of AJ's sermon caused us to reflect on the trip. He spoke of budgets and how churches sometimes prioritize them above all else, and how uncertainty cannot be avoided or planned away. Victory Lap

Hello, This is Joanna. Our trip has really changed in the past few weeks. Right now, we are at the Case's house in Houghton NY. They are friends/professors/almost family that we have all known in different ways over the years. They have all encouraged us over the course of planning this trip, and it has been wonderful to share our stories from the trip and roll into their driveway victoriously. So how has the trip changed? Now that I have finished the seventh week I can picture the trip in its entirety. I remember the smell of the Pacific, people gawking at us as we cycled by in all of our new shiny gear. I remember the smell of onions and potatoes in Idaho, the distant snow covered mountains and the endless switchbacks. The plains were endless, with brutal headwinds - but when we had a tailwind it was heaven (especially that 120 mile day in Indiana!). Leaving Oregon

If you've ever been outside of the coast or Portland, at least where we went, you'd know there are a lot of long ups and downs. I said when I get back, I'm going to write a book called "The Road to Tygh Valley" and talk about how treacherous the heat, wind, and climbing was. As bad as our first week went, having almost 10 flats between the four of us, two accidents (no road rash), and a lot of sunburn, leaving Oregon has been bitter sweet in itself. We've experienced long and tiresome days, ending with some of the best hospitality one could find. After a long day looking for the town of John Day, we stumbled upon Dayville, where we found a church, acting as a bike hostel where we experienced warm showers and a lot off really good food from the potluck that happened to be going on after Sunday's church service.
